Weymouth Bay Medical Practice
FacebookFlu Season 2024
Each year all GP Practices embark on the seasonal flu vaccination campaign
The vaccine is designed to protect against the strains predicted to be in circulation the season. People aged 65 years and over and those at risk of all ages are offered the vaccine.
Our practice has 12,817 patients who are eligible!
To ensure that the delivery of the vaccination programme does not adversely impact on the usual day to day running of the practice, but also to vaccinate patients as soon as possible, the practice stages large off site clinics at Wey Valley School, along with special clinics for children at the Surgery on Saturdays.
If you are eligible for the flu vaccination but have not yet received it, please telephone the surgery to book an appointment. We would love to see you!

This year, GP practices were also asked to provide Covid vaccine alongside the flu vaccine, as you can imagine this takes a lot of planning by the Practice to ensure that vaccinations are delivered swiftly, safely and efficiently.
It's an early start for Heidi & Helen
The vaccine is transported in special cool bags to ensure that storage is kept at the correct temperature

Opportunistic blood pressure checks were offered and where necessary patients were signposted for further assessment. Tracey Manders from Weymouth & Portland Primary Care Network (PCN) taking a patient's blood pressure alongside Abby Loader a nurse also from Weymouth & Portland PCN.
Abby Loader has been recently appointed to deliver a project for people living in Weymouth and Portland up to December 2024 which aims to prevent heart disease and stoke by identifying raised blood pressure at an early stage, supported the management of hypertension and atrial fibrillation and by raising awareness to promote healthy blood pressure and circulation
Artrial Fibrillation
Patients over the age of 65 are given a pulse check whilst having the vaccination. This is to check for a condition that causes an irregular heart rate and increases the risk of hear attack and stroke. If an irregular pulse is detected, the patient then has an ECG, at the clinic by a small hand held device.
This year so far, at our clinics 6 new cases of Artrial Fibrillation have been identified early, enabling treatment and therefore reduction of risk of more serious illness occurring.
Thanks
We are extremely grateful to our Patient Participation Group Volunteers, who helped out at our clinics directing traffic in the car park, assisting patients to the entrance of the clinic, and special thanks to our PPG Chair John Hewitt and James McMahon for promoting and assisting patients to use the NHS App.
